SOC / Fox 40 Awards

Sports Officials Canada and FOX 40 International Inc. sponsor an annual National Officiating Award program.  The program recognizes a male and a female technical official who have made a significant contribution to officiating at the national and international level.

The award, the “FOX 40 Kitch MacPherson Award of Excellence” is in honour of the late Kitch MacPherson of Hamilton, Ontario in recognition of his service as a referee in the sport of basketball nationally and internationally.

Nominees must be Canadian Citizens or hold landed immigrant status.  Nominees must be a member of a national sport organization which holds current membership in Sports Officials Canada, (SOC).

SOC Ron Foxcroft Pro Official Award

The Award, the Ron Foxcroft Award, is in honour of Ron Foxcroft of Hamilton, Ontario for his personal achievement as a basketball referee at the international level, the NCAA level and as an NBA league observer.  The award also honours Ron’s considerable ongoing support of officiating development in Canada.

The intent of the award is to honour an active or retired official on the basis of his/her achievement of excellence in a professional sport environment.

Nominees must be Canadian Citizens or hold landed immigrant status. Nominees must be a member of a national sport or professional sport organization which holds current membership in Sports Officials Canada, (SOC).

SOC Allen G. Rae Builder Award

The Award the Allen G. Rae Builder Award, was created to recognize an individual who has made a significant contribution to the development of sports officials and the advancement of the sports officiating profession.   This award is presented at the discretion of the SOC Board.

Nominees must be Canadian Citizens or hold landed immigrant status and be nominated by an SOC member association. All nominees must meet the following criteria:

• Have a minimum of 20 years of involvement in officiating, but does not have to be currently active as an official to receive the award. The award may be given posthumously
• Have demonstrated leadership in an officiating environment
• Have made an impact in advocating for sports officials across Canada
• Have made a significant effort in directing and developing clinics for sports officials
• Have acted as a mentor for sports officials
• Have been recognized for demonstrating or contributing to excellence in sports officiating
• Have compiled an outstanding officiating record provincially, regionally, nationally and/or internationally

Sports Officials Canada Announces 3-year Agreement with Fox 40 International Inc.

OTTAWA — Sports Officials Canada (SOC) is pleased to announce that Fox 40 International has agreed to a three-year contract with the organization.  The Hamilton based company has been a supporter of SOC since it's inception in 2001.

Sports Officials Canada Announces Nine Partners for 2010 Conference

OTTAWA (August, 2010) — Sports Officials Canada is pleased to announce it's slate of Partners for the 2010 Annual Conference — Made in Canada:  Building Our Officials — scheduled for Toronto, Ontario September 24 to 26.  The SOC Partner Program, which was launched in 2008, was designed to attract support for the association's annual conference.  The list of renewing Partners includes — ArbiterSports, the National Hockey League, Delta Hotels & Resorts, the National Hockey League Officials Association, the Canadian Football League, Delta Meadowvale Resort & Conference Centre and the Canadian Professional Football Officials Association.  These companies join Fox 40 International — an SOC Business Partner — and the Premiere sponsor of the annual Awards Dinner held during the conference weekend.  It was announced earlier that Fox 40 International had renewed its three-year agreement with Sports Officials Canada as its Premiere Sponsor.

UNICEF Releases Report on Protecting Children from Violence in Sport

During recent years, it has become evident that sport is not always a safe space for children, and that the same types of violence and abuse sometimes found in families and communities can also occur in sport and play programs. Child athletes are rarely consulted about their sporting experiences, and awareness of and education on child protection issues among sport teachers, coaches and other stakeholders is too often lacking. Overall, appropriate structures and policies need to be developed for preventing, reporting and responding appropriately to violence in children’s sport.

In recognition of this, the UNICEF Innocenti Research Centre commissioned a review of the available empirical research and policy initiatives on this subject. The research resulted in a wealth of information, now published in this report. ‘Protecting Children from Violence in Sport...
