NEW  SOC Announces New Insurance Program for iMembers

Sports Officials Canada is pleased to announce a new benefit for SOC iMembers. Sports Officials Canada has facilitated an excellent Liability and Accident Insurance Program for iMembers with SUTTON SPORTSCOVER Ltd through Pearson Dunn Insurance.  The program is totally optional and iMembers may sign up for the coverage at any time.  The total premium (including the sales tax from the insurance company) is just $16 for a full year of coverage. 

  • General Liability - $5,000,000 any one occurrence. 
  • Participant Liability - in many standard liability insurance policies participants are excluded, but in the broad form coverage with Sutton Sportscover Ltd, this coverage is included.
  • Voluntary Medical Payments - Reimburses others (third party) for their medical expenses if they are injured as a result of your activities up to $10,000.
  • Blanket Tenants Legal Liability - Provides coverage for your legal responsibility for damage to premises that you rent in the course of your activities up to $250,000.
  • Non-Owned Automobile Coverage - Protection against legal liability imposed by law upon the insured for loss or damage arising from the use or operation of any automobile not owned by the insured.
  • Personal Injury - Coverage against libel, slander
  • Advertisers Liability – Coverage for an advertiser’s negligent acts and./or omissions in advertising (both written and oral) that may result in a civil suit for libel, slander or defamation of character.
  • Incidental Medical Malpractice - Protection for rendering first aid to an injured person by a non-medical professional in the course of your activities.
  • Cross Liability Clause - This clause allows for additional insured’s to sue, if necessary within the policy.
  • Employers Liability - To protect the insured against the possibility of an employee suing for injury suffered in the course of their employment.
  • Premises, Property and Operations - This provides coverage for the insured who is responsible in the scope of their operations for premises and property to which they have control over.  It also includes coverage for their own operations (activities)


The Amateur Accident Insurance also extends WORLDWIDE and includes

  • Capital Benefits                    $25,000
  • Medical Benefits                   $10,000 (Subject to $250 Ded)
  • Physio Benefits Limit             $500 (subject to $100 Ded)
  • Loss of Income                     (Amount Payable is the lesser of 75% Net Income lost or
  • Elimination period –14 days each and every loss. Max.benefit period 52 weeks $300/week max.)
  • Funeral Expenses Benefit       $2,000
  • Repatriation Benefit              $2,000

Separate travel/medical insurance may be purchased for activities outside of your officiating duties. You must have the Enhanced Membership in order to access this additional insurance. The Program Overview and Application form are available in pdf form.

Please note that you must be an SOC iMember for the insurance to be valid.  If your membership is allowed to expire prior to your insurance, your insurance will also expire.

Sports Officials Canada Announces 3-year Agreement with Fox 40 International Inc.

OTTAWA — Sports Officials Canada (SOC) is pleased to announce that Fox 40 International has agreed to a three-year contract with the organization.  The Hamilton based company has been a supporter of SOC since it's inception in 2001.

Sports Officials Canada Announces Nine Partners for 2010 Conference

OTTAWA (August, 2010) — Sports Officials Canada is pleased to announce it's slate of Partners for the 2010 Annual Conference — Made in Canada:  Building Our Officials — scheduled for Toronto, Ontario September 24 to 26.  The SOC Partner Program, which was launched in 2008, was designed to attract support for the association's annual conference.  The list of renewing Partners includes — ArbiterSports, the National Hockey League, Delta Hotels & Resorts, the National Hockey League Officials Association, the Canadian Football League, Delta Meadowvale Resort & Conference Centre and the Canadian Professional Football Officials Association.  These companies join Fox 40 International — an SOC Business Partner — and the Premiere sponsor of the annual Awards Dinner held during the conference weekend.  It was announced earlier that Fox 40 International had renewed its three-year agreement with Sports Officials Canada as its Premiere Sponsor.

UNICEF Releases Report on Protecting Children from Violence in Sport

During recent years, it has become evident that sport is not always a safe space for children, and that the same types of violence and abuse sometimes found in families and communities can also occur in sport and play programs. Child athletes are rarely consulted about their sporting experiences, and awareness of and education on child protection issues among sport teachers, coaches and other stakeholders is too often lacking. Overall, appropriate structures and policies need to be developed for preventing, reporting and responding appropriately to violence in children’s sport.

In recognition of this, the UNICEF Innocenti Research Centre commissioned a review of the available empirical research and policy initiatives on this subject. The research resulted in a wealth of information, now published in this report. ‘Protecting Children from Violence in Sport...
